WEDDING CEREMONIES
When planning a wedding, music plays such an important role in creating an atmosphere and setting the mood, whether you are planning a traditional, contemporary or a destination wedding. The wedding ceremony is the main event, and it’s important to choose appropriate music that highlights the significance of the moment…
I played my first wedding when I was 17 - my friend Nicola’s Aunt and I absolutely loved it! I was so nervous beforehand, but it went really well. I’m very grateful that playing at weddings has brought me to many amazing places, from beautiful venues in Ireland to overseas and with so many brilliant musicians.
I get asked all the time about what songs should be played and what couples are allowed to do. I say it’s your day so you should do what you want (within reason!)
By choosing the perfect music for each part of the ceremony, you can create a memorable experience that will stay with you and your guests forever.
All types of Ceremonies
There are many civil ceremonies, ie: Druid, Humanist, Spiritual.. Some may only require a few songs or couples may script their own and have many key points for music. Beautiful features like; the lighting of the unity candle, the warming of the rings, the tying of the knot and the pouring of sand are perfect opportunities for couples to hear their favourite pieces.
Prelude Music
As the guests arrive, you may set the stage with some instrumental music that is soft and soothing, some beautiful irish melodies and airs.
Processional Music
As a general rule the bridal party entrance music would be different from the groom's entrance music. In most cases, the groom is already ready and waiting so just one piece here.
Interlude Music
During the ceremony, you might opt for an interlude, such as a unity candle or sand ceremony. During this time, soft and romantic music is the perfect choice or traditional irish airs.
Liturgical Music for Mass
For a church ceremony, there could be up to ten pieces of music including the psalm and alleluia. Depending on the priest, these songs could be a mix of hymnal, classical, traditional, instrumental or popular.
Recessional Music
As the newlyweds make their grand exit, the recessional music should create a feeling of joy and happiness.
Overall, the music should reflect the couple's personalities and style. I love getting to know the couples beforehand to ensure they get what they have in mind. It’s great to hear an idea being brought to life and helping to create lasting memories.
